Tide Lock of Alexandria Canal. The Alexandria Canal connected the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal in Georgetown with the Potomac River in Alexandria. Canal boats crossed the Potomac River on the Aqeuduct Bridge, which connected Georgetown and Rosslyn near the present site of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. The boats then travelled on canal through Arlington and Alexandria to enter the Potomac River at this point.
After the canal closed, landfill covered the tide lock. Archaeologists re-exposed and restored the tide lock as part of the development of the Transpotomac Canal Center.
