Berliner Stadtschloss - Humboldtforum (Berlin)

The Berliner Stadtschloss (Berlin City Palace), the residence of the Emperors of Germany, was originally located on this site. It was badly damaged in World War II. While still salvageable, it was demolished by the East-German Government in 1950 as a relic of the past imperial and militarist regime.

The site sat vacant for decades and was used as a parade ground, before the Palast der Republik was built here by the communists in 1976. After reunification, some claimed the building was an important historical site from Germany's recent past, while others felt it was an asbestos-filled reminder of Soviet domination. After much discussion, the building was controversially demolished from 2006-2008.

The historic Stadtschloss was rebuilt from 2013-2020, with a modern interior housing the Humboldtforum - a forum for world art, culture and science.
