The second permanent bridge across the Missouri River at Sioux City opened in 1896.
It was constructed by the Pacific Short Line for foot, horse and rail traffic, and was nicknamed the Combination Bridge because it carried various forms of traffic. Railroad use of the bridge was by the Great Northern Railway during the 1890s, which later recieved rights to use the C&NW bridge. Replacement came during 1981 by the new Veterans Memorial Bridge, due to structural issues.
