"On 15 March 1942, the War Department acquired from the Santa Fe Railroad a leasehold interest (Lease No. W-868-ENG-1718) in a 68,000 sq. ft. warehouse located in Hanford, Kings County, California for and on behalf of the Chemical Warfare Procurement Service of the U. S. Army. The site was bounded by South William Street to the west, Fifth Street to the north, South Thornton Street to the east, and Fourth Street to the south.

"The site was known as the Hanford Warehouse, and was used for storage of surplus industrial equipment and surplus materials and components.

On 18 March 1946, the Hanford Warehouse was declared surplus and the lease was terminated 5 April 1946."

"This site was leased from the Santa Fe Railroad, and was used as a storage facility and sub-depot for the San Francisco Chemical Warfare Procurement District and the Ninth Army Service Forces Command. The warehouse was surplussed after World War II, and the lease was cancelled in 1946. At that time, the land reverted back to the Santa Fe Railroad.

"The land was further sold to the Beacon Oil Company, and was then divided and sold. Records indicate that only non-lethal materials were stored at the site, and no further investigation into ordinance and explosive waste at the site is recommended."
