The Turret Gateway, which is also known as ‘Rupert's Gate’, was built in 1422-23, but has been in ruins since 1832 when it was almost destroyed by a mob during an election riot. This was the main gateway from The Newarke into the castle and the groves of the erstwhile portcullis can still be seen.
