Kolhapur is a very ancient city, famous for its food, headwear, footwear, jewellery, wrestling and religious connections. According to legend it was settled by Kolha-Asur, a demon who was later killed by Mahalakshmi to relieve the local populace. However, honoring the demon's dying wish, the city was named after him.
The population of Kolhapur is around 419,000. The main language is Marathi. It is situated on the banks of river Panchganga and provides the location for the Mahalakshmi Temple. The city also lends its name to many common terms like Kolhapuri Chappal , Kolhapuri lavangi mirchi, Kolhapuri gur, Kolhapuri Pudachi Vadi and Kolhapuri cusine.

Shivaji University is located in Kolhapur. Kolhapur has a long history of sending its dear ones in the army. Kolhpaur is known for its delicious Kolhapuri mutton (goat) curries, high per capita income in asia and above all wonderful people who are well known for their hospitality. This place is famous for its pilgrim places as well for its tourist attraction.

Like In the city most famous 'Mahalakshami Temple , Rankala lake, Juna rajawada, New Rajawada.Also outside Kolhapur city like Phanala (20 KM, Hill station , Shivaji Maharaj Fort),Jotiba(15 KM, Famous Temple),Gaganbawada (52 KM , Start of Kokan,Nice place to watch greenery also visit Gagangiri maharaj temple), Ratanagiri (50 KM , Very old dam , Beautiful greenary, Hilly area near to Dajipur forest). Secondly, The area of Kolhapur is restricted even if it is sanctioned to cover 20 k.m. around Kolhapur, if it is covered then Kolhapur will be in the criteria of big city to have monetary help from central government. i don'd understand why these political leaders do understand this.
