  • Actually, radar was developed around WWII and was a combined effort between US and UK scientists. The US had the basic technology and the British has a Magnetron that had smaller wave lengths that allowed for better resolution at greater distances. The British sent their technology to the US to help us and keep it out of Britain in case the Germans did invade the Island. The combination of the US and British technology was brought together and developed in a roof top lab at MIT in Cambridge called the RAD LAB. Short for Radiation Lab. Radiation research was new and it was a good cover for why they were bringing all the scientists to MIT. After the War the continued development was moved to MIT Lincoln Labs. Where they developed radar for tracking planes and ICBM missiles. They also developed Laser Radar, and tracked orbiting space equipment, bounced a laser off a reflector on the Moon and developed tracking devices to track stealth aircraft. The did the early development for a Megawatt laser, that was the precursor to the military laser weapons. My dad worked there for 35 years. A lot of the early research is now declassified and I have been able to learn a lot more about what he did.
