A delightful state park, with numerous trails going through and around the island. It is a welcome break from the bustling cities of Cohoes and Troy. Access it from botth Waterford (Second St. bridge) or Cohoes.
Along the northern part of the island, especially near the bridge to Waterford, there are numerous breastworks, or mounds, built during the Revolutionary War. They were built in anticipation of the British General Burgoyne's approach from Canada. If his troops had not been defeated by American forces in the Battle of Saratoga in 1778, they would have confronted the rebels here on their march to Albany.
