Poonkakkotta Temple

Poonkakkotta Temple

POONGAVANAM TEMPLE
TEMPLE OF LORD SHIVA.
Inside the Hosdurg Fort. See Hosdurg Fort also. History: Other forts in Bekal, Kasaragod and Kumble have got Hanuman Temples in the entrance to the fort, while it is Shiva Temple inside this Fort only. It is said that the temple was abandoned at the time of the Tippu's invasion and after a long time of dilapidated condition, it was revived about 100 years back by the forefathers of the present trustee. Renovation work is still going on under the supervision of the Endowment Board. The fort was said to be built by the Ikkeri Naiks rule (1499 - 1763 CE). There is no epigraphical evidence, but I remember, the only two houses were inside the fort in my childhood (some 45 years ago) of muslim community where an old lady claimed to be the descendants of one of the Tippu's commanders.
