fortification, star fort
On the land side the wall of great masonry blocks is intact but on passing through the gateway the interior is found to be filled with sea-water, forming a basin used by town residents for an early morning or late afternoon swim. This state of affairs seems to have existed for more than two hundred years, for when Admiral Knowles inspected Savanna-la-mar in 1755 he pronounced it to be "in my opinion the worst port in the island, very shoal water defended only by reefs but the inhabitants thought proper to lay out £16,100 upon a fort never finished, and a third of it at least is fallen down into sea".
