The Sado Estuary Natural Reserve or RNES, occupies a total area of 23,160 hectares, integrated in the municipalities of Setúbal, Alcácer do Sal, Grândola and Palmela, having been created through Decree-Law nº 430/80, of 1 October , the pollution affecting the Sado estuary and the danger of damaging the existing natural heritage of botanical and faunal interest. It is also classified as a CORINE Biotope.
