Originally founded in 1230 under Alexander III King of the Scots, for the French Valliscaulian monastic Order.
In 1454 in became a Catholic Benedictine Priory under Dunfermline Abbey.
Pluscarden Abbey is probably the only medieval monastery in the UK that is still home to a working community of Roman Catholic, Benedictine monks.
Only some areas are open to visitors.
