The pool house at Shangri La was called "The Playhouse" and was modeled on the Chihil Sutun, a royal pavilion built in 1647 in Isfahan, Iran, which Doris Duke originally visited in 1938 with her friend and advisor, Mary Crane. It is a widely held belief that Doris Duke was drawn to the building's design because it blends interior and exterior spaces--which is characteristic of Shangri La. |
