Campus Lake is one of the six lakes that make up the University Lakes District. The man-made lakes were formed when cypress swamps were timbered and dammed in the 1930s through the federal government’s Works Projects Administration established through executive order by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The 300 acre area was enlarged and deepened to create the University Lakes, establishing the perimeter of the newly formed Baton Rouge campus and improving the residential areas located around the campus.
