Veeraanam Lake

This is the Veeraanam Lake formerly known as Veeranaaraayanapuram Lake.

Veeranam Lake, built by the Chola kings, is the main reservoir to meet the drinking water requirements of Chennai city. The lake draws water from the Cauvery River. The Lake is located at Senthathope which is about 230 km south of Chennai. The lake has a capacity to store about 1,465 mcft of water.

Though the level in the Veeranam lake has dipped to 323 million cubic feet (mcft), the same amount of 180 mld (million litres a day) was being drawn for city supply.

Water released from the Mettur dam through Kollidam and Lower Anicut would also bring in sufficient inflow into the Veeranam Lake.

The lake received sufficient inflow in April enabling supply to the city for three months With heavy rain in Western Ghats, the lake almost got its storage capacity as it received inflow from the Cauvery tributaries Bhavani and Amaravathi.

    The Veeranam Lake is the biggest wetland ecosystem in TamilNadu state. Veeranam lake is migratory spot for seveal waterbirds that winters during October to March. Birds like Open billed Stork a threatened species and other important migrants like Spot billed Pelican, Mallard, Teals and ducks and different species of Terns can be seen in the lake. No boat facility is there to make ferry. Only country made small boats are available. One can really do birding from the shore itself!. Thousands of agriculture areas are fed by this tank. The fertile wetland meets out the water requirment of the Chennai city people to some extent. The tail end of Cavery river from Kallanai dam empties in the Veeranam tank. The fertile ecosystem needs to protected for ensuring the birds arrival and the sustainable utilization of the lake's productivity. Because Nature conservation is everybody's business. Let us safe gaurd the wetlands where ever it may be.

The lake located 235 km from Chennai, India, is one of the water reservoirs from where water is planned to be supplied to Chennai. Veeranam project[1] for supply of water to Chennai was conceived 36 years ago, but was not completed since the then CM was the architect of corruption and he siphoned out the money earmarked for the project. Then came the era of able CM Jayalalitha who was able to complete the project with ease and efficiency. Veeranam Lake was created during Chola period in the tenth century, built from 1011 to 1037 AD[2] and is an 16 km (10 mile) long dam in northern Tamil Nadu. Ironically, the lake remains dry for a major part of the year.
