The lake Silbersee is an artificial lake. It was actually never planned. It appeared when ground water filled the abandoned building site of the Deutsche Stadion (German Stadium) planned by Albert Speer. The stadium was supposed to be 800 meters long, 450 meters wide and 100 meters high.
Swimming in the Silbersee is absolutely forbidden! Wastes from the former building site of the stadium emit hydrogen sulphide which is highly toxic. Due to the threat big hazard warning signs surround the idyllic lake and create an somewhat surrealistic atmosphere. The Silbersee has claimed several lives of incautious swimmers so far.
