Bongaigan, the district head quarter town, is situated by the bank of river 'Aie'. The name Bongaigaon was derived from this fact that it is situated on the bank of river 'Aie'. As per the local(rajbonshi) dialect, which is used by the original dwelers of the area, Bang(bong) means Bank of river, Ai meaning the river 'Aie' and goan is to mean village.Formerly an agriculture based village, Bongaigan is now developing in the field of economy and industries.
