  • its my place in kochi.its a wonder
  • MATTANCHERRY IS THE NERVE TOWN OF OLD HISTORIC COCHIN. COCHIN, THE NAME DENOTES, "CO-CHIN", MEANING "LIKE-CHINA". yES, IT LOOKED LIKE CHINA WHEN THE CHINESE CAME HERE IN 14TH CENTURY AND ERECTED THESE BEAUTIFUL CHINESE NETS. NOW ABOUT MATTANCHERRY. CHERRY MEANS TOWN IN OLD MALAYALAM. IT IS MAADAN-CHERRY. MAAD OR COW WAS THE STAMP OF OLD ROYAL FORTE OF RAJAH OF COCHIN, WHO HAD BUILT HIS PALACE AT FIRST-AFTER THE FALL OF KODUNGALLUR OR MUSSARIS PORT DUE TO A GIGANTIC HAVOC OF FLOOD -YES, IT WAS A SUNAMI- IN THE YEAR AD 1341, WHICH HISTORIANS AGREE IN UNISON. THE PERUMPADAPPU SWAROOPAM OR THE FORTE OF RAJAH HAD IT'S PALACE ON THE BANKS OF CALVATHY RIVER. BECAUSE OF CONTINUED WARS BETWEEN KING SAMORIN OF KOZHIKODE AND AMONG THE WESTERN COLONIAL FORCES, THE RAJAH HAD TO QUIT THE PLACE TO TRIPUNITHURA. THE KING HAD HIS VAISHNAV LEANINGS AND COW OR MAADU WAS THEIR SYMBOL. SO MAADAN-CHERRY OR MATTANCHERRY, WHICH NEVER HAS EXHIBITED ANY KINGISH OR ROYAL SCAR IN IT'S CHARACTER. THE FALL OF THE OLD GLORIOUS PORT TOWN AND THE COMMERCIAL CENTRE HAD SPRAWLED OUT MANY A SLUM WITH ALL IT'S CHARACTERESTIC IMPOVERISHMENT. BUT THE PEOPLE HERE BELONGING TO SO MANY ETHNIC, LINGUISTIC, CULTURAL GROUPS LIVE IN PEACEFUL CO EXISTENCE WITH THEIR LOVABLE ATTRIBUTES AND GLORIOUS PAST AND OFCOURSE, WITH THE LEANINGS TO ANY KIND OF MUSIC... Suraj Sherif Thanx To M. Iqbal('X' counciler of Mattancherry)
  • yes suraj has given a correct explanation...and M.Iqbal is not only an ex-councilor but also an historain, philosopher, scholar.. He is remembered by all the common people of Fort Kochi and Mattancherry
