Hawthorne Center (former site of Mayo General Hospital)

Built as an Army hospital in 1944. Neurosurgery and peripheral vascular surgery for WWII vets (many frostbite cases). Housed German POWs. After the Army declared it surplus in 1946, it became the Galesburg branch of the University of Illinois. Later, it was the home of the Galesburg State Research Hospital, where the drug Chlorpromazine was created/tested/studied. The campus is now home to many different businesses, with the primary one being Bridgeway Inc. Bridgeway is a not-for-profit human services organization who serves persons with disabilites.

H.E. Himwich: associated with several MKULTRA people. Small road named after him on campus of Mayo G.H. He turned Sydney Gottlieb on to LSD.
