Delaware Community School formerly Albany Public School #18

The building shown in this picture was torn down in 2005 and replaced with a new school. It's been renamed Deleware Community School.

The old building was unique in that it has entrances and facades on two parallel streets, Bertha and Hurlbut. The original school was built in 1914 with additions in 1916. An earlier school 18 was once located at the intersection of Western and Madison Avenues.

Delaware Community School moved into a brand-new, state-of-the-art building on the original site of School 18 in January 2007. In a new building, Delaware Community School will continue School 18’s fine tradition of serving as a neighborhood school with community at its heart.
The new school features space for parent and community groups to meet. Some other new features include modern art and music rooms, a state-of-the-art library/media center, a cafeteria and a larger gymnasium. The 55,000-square-foot building serves approximately 450 students in Pre-K through Grade 5.
