Second World War 1939-1945, military, battleship, NRHP - National Register of Historic Places, historic landmark, United States Navy, museum ship, U.S. National Historic Landmark

One of four members of the South Dakota Class of Fast Battleships, USS Alabama is a decorated Second World War Veteran which served in both the Atlantic and Pacific theatres during the war.

Laid down in the Norfolk Naval Ship Yard on February 1st, 1940, she was launched on February 16, 1942 and was placed in commission on August 16, 1942. Earning nine Battle Stars for her service that took her from the Arctic Circle off Russia to the shores of Japan itself, she decommissioned in 1947 and remained in reserve through 1962. Stricken from the Naval Register and subsequently offered for preservation, the State of Alabama purchased the ship to serve as a museum and memorial at Battleship Memorial Park in Mobile where she arrived in June 1964.

Today the Alabama and her sister ship USS Massachusetts (BB-59) are the only remaining South Dakota Class Battleships in existence today, and both serve as museum ships in their home states.
