The Sunken Lane or Hunter's Trench

Troops from the Lancashire Fusiliers were filmed here by Malins shortly before going over to attack German positions in Beaumont Hamel. The explosion of the mine at Hawthorn resulted in the Germans being fully prepared and the attack was a disaster with many of the men killed within yards of the lane itself. There is a memorial to Scottish troops at the entrance to the lane.
