Castle Acre Priory (ruins)

United Kingdom / England / Swaffham /
ruins, monastery, interesting place, Grade I Listed (UK)

Impressive ruins of a priory of the Cluniac order (Catholic) established in the early middle ages. Destroyed, along with many other monasteries, by King Henry VIII in the 16th century when he took over the Church in England.

Castle Acre was the first Cluniac foundation in England (1077). Unlike Cistercian foundations, Cluniacs didn't eschew decoration in their architecture, and Castle Acre exhibits some fine detail.

Open to the public, in the care of English Heritage.
