The largest square in Vilnius, located in the Naujamiestis district. Apearance of the square is related with Vilnius city expansion to west direction by transforming Lukiškės subburb and quay to city blocks. New representative city centre was started to form in according to 1817 Vilnius layout plan. In 1861 this area was turned into a large market place. After 1863–1864 resistance in Poland and Lithuania, Lukiškės Square was used to execute publicly 21 resistance participant. Memorial rock to retain rebels executed in 1863 was layed in 1920. In 1936 Lukiškės square was renamed into Józef Piłsudski Square, monument of Józef Piłsudski was built in the centre of square. During 1949–1952 the square was reconstructed according Vladislov Mikuchiani project. Monument of Lenin was built in the centre of square in 1952. Lenin monument was demontated in 1991.
