Sometimes referred to as the "Ellis Island of the West". In the late 19th century, the island was used as a detention center for Chinese immigrants. Immigration inspectors put detainees through grueling interrogations before allowing the lucky few to proceed to San Francisco due to the onerous restrictions placed on Chinese immigration by the Chinese Exclusion Acts.
