In the department of Lot et Garonne, population about 7000. Situated on the banks of the Baise River. To my mind, Nerac is the most picturesque and photogenic town on the Baise. Entry by boat from the north, through a narrow lock beside the old mill and under the Vieux Pont (Old Bridge), is an unforgettable experience. From the 14th century, Nerac was the home of the powerful Albret family. Jeanne d'Albret married into the Navarre royal family and the chateau at Nerac became a royal residence. Nerac was a protestant stronghold in the 16th century. In 1623 on the orders of Louis XIII, the fortifications of the chateau were dismantled. Now only one wing remains, it houses a museum.
