Site of Smallcombe and Clandown Colliery (Disused)

The area designated is largely the site of Clandown Pit, Incline & Batches - which closed in 1930. It was once the deepest pit (1437 ft) in the district, and was by chance sunk more or less on the Radstock Fault - which meant it could work more extensively on different landings over a long time span.

Smallcombe - which closed much earlier - was a more modest pit altogether, situated in the field in the NE of the area designated. Mineral Rights were owned by the Waldergraves as opposed to the Duchy at Clandown Pit itself, & operated by a different companies, working more limited seams than its much larger 'neighbour' and over a far shorter period
