Small town of 6000 inhabitants located in the northeast of Vaucluse county (département). It is famous for its ancient Roman ruins, there are two major excavation zones. Also, there is a weekly market on Tuesdays, one of the most impressive ones in Southern France, and also one of the oldest ones.
Vaison was subject to major floodings of the Ouvèze River in 1992, following extreme precipitations. About 50 people died, mostly guests of a nearby campsite situated in the flood zone.
