Lindisfarne Priory, Holy Island, Northumberland, England

Former Benedictine Priory Church, Lindisfarne (Holy Island).
The monastery of Lindisfarne was founded by St. Aidan, who had been sent from Iona off the west coast of Scotland to Northumbria at the request of King Oswald around 635 AD. Monks from the community of Iona settled on the island, and it became the base for Christian missions in northern England
The priory was re-established in Norman times as a Benedictine monastery and continued until its suppression in 1536 under Henry VIII. It is now a ruin in the care of English Heritage, who also run a visitor center nearby. The neighboring parish church is still in use.
