Dana Porter Library (Waterloo, Ontario)

Canada / Ontario / Kitchener / Waterloo, Ontario

The lower seven stories of the ten storey library building were completed in 1965 with the upper three stories added in 1969. The precast concrete structure was designed by Shore Moffat & Partners and features a series of funnel shaped pillars at the bottom of the facade. It was designed as the focal point of the campus and is sited at the intersection of all main foot paths between departments as well as to residential halls. Built on a natural high point it is visible from all parts of the nearby university town. Because of its focal interest,it was designed as symmetrical, simple, and very repetitive. The characteristics of simplicity and repetitiveness also enhance the economic advantages of the building material.

The library was named after Dana H. Porter (1901-1967) , former provincial Minister of Planning & Development and Chief Justice of Ontario. The building is home to a large collection of books focused on the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.

  • My wifie used to go to UW and I an tell you first hand that Porter is a great place to check out the undergraduate chicks. Ya gotta love the hot young first-years, they always try so hard to get noticed; young things ready to be harvested.
