Sines is a city in the Alentejo Region, with a population of 11,303. It has a castle built under Peter I of Portugal (14th c.), as well as the only marina between Setubal and the Algarve. The town has been expanding since the construction of a deep-sea port and a petrochemical complex next to the city, in the 1970s.
Every summer, the city hosts the FMM Sines - Festival Músicas do Mundo, a world music festival that brings thousands of enthusiasts and musicians from all continents.
