This may even be the reason for the position of the Guildhall. Discovered in 1988, excavations completed in 1993 revealed a large amphitheatre dating from around 70AD, which was in use for about 300 years. The site was re-used - possibly as part of a Saxon royal palace - and the structure of the present Guildhall appears to relate to the layout of the amphitheatre, with the hall on the site of the Governor's viewing box and using its central arena as a forecourt.
The great thing is that you can go down and see the remains underneath the excellent Guildhall Art Gallery. See the outline of the central arena marked in black on the paving.
