Four houses on the south side of Maryland west of Taylor avenue are referred to as the Sister houses.
Built by David Rowland Francis (October 1, 1850 – January 15, 1927) the only mayor of St. Louis to subsequently be elected Governor. Francis was one of the main promoters of the St. Louis World's Fair of 1904, serving as President of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition. He built these four homes for his children, three daughters and one son in close proximately to the 1904 Fair site.
All four homes are substantially the same as they were when built and consist of three main floors, full basements and an attic.
