The Château de Sceaux as it stands today was built 1856-62 and contains the Musée de l'Île-de-France. The museum contains one of the largest collections of the painters of the School of Paris, among which are four paintings of Maurice Boitel.

The previous château on the site was a grander structure built for Louis XIV's minister of finance. It was demolished in the aftermath of the French Revolution.
