  • CUED has produced some of the world's most distinguished engineers, including Sir Charles Parsons, inventor of the steam turbine, Sir Frank Whittle, inventor of the het engine, Sir Harry Ricardo, inventor of the two-stroke petrol engine and the world's leading authority in the development of the internal combustion engine, and Sir John Baker, the inventor of the revolutionary Morrison air-raid shelter and developer of the plastic theory of metals. The main building on the site is named in honour of Sir John. The CUED has also been the source of the scanning electron microscope, geotechnical engineering, and computer aided design
