building, museum, monument, ruins, Roman Empire, bathhouse, 3rd century constructions
The ruins of a Roman public bath, or thermae, built between 212 and 216 AD during the reign of the Emperor Caracalla. The remains are vast and portions of the exterior double as an operatic venue in the summer: it was here that The Three Tenors (Plácido Domingo, José Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti) gave their first concert in 1991.
Don't bother paying to go in; the majority of the main complex is restricted to foot traffic due to the surviving mosaic flooring. Just walk round the perimiter and take in a good, satisfying look.
