Cocles Beach (Playa Cocles)

This public beach is a wide expanse of medium to fine grained dark sand facing northeast. About 2 km long, it offers excellent swimming and surfing when the waves are up. It's a short bike ride or a fair walk from Puerto Viejo (2 to 3 km). Pack a lunch and make a morning of it as the beach gets shady in the afternoon. There are a couple of surf shacks supplying gear and lessons across from the beach.

There are hotels only 3 km from town in this map square. They're better, cleaner and quieter - great for those who want a comfy, tranquil spot after partying in town. Some are just little cabins in the foliage.
