The Wheel Inn (Demolished)

Right next door to the life-size dinosaurs off the I-10 in Cabazon, California - and signified by the giant sign with the word "EAT" - is The Wheel Inn, a little truck stop that has been open 24/7 since 1964.

Pee Wee Herman (Paul Reubens) was dropped off here by the mysterious truck driver Large Marge in "Pee Wee's Big Adventure" (1985). Inside the dining-room there was a shrine set up to Large Marge, and Pee Wee met some of the locals and regular truck drivers.

In the Tears for Fears video, "Everybody Wants to Rule The World," Curt Smith stopped at the Wheel Inn to use the phone booth. The video is a glimpse of what the area was like in the 1980's before it was built up with chain restaurants.

On this very night...
along the same stretch of road...
in a dense fog...
just like this...
I saw the worst accident I ever seen...
There was this sound...
Like a garbage truck!
Dropped off the empire state building!
And when they finally pulled the driver's body...
From the Twisted... Burning... Wreck...
It looked like...
THIS!!!!!!
hooo hooo hooo hooo hooo haaaah!

Yes sir...
That was the worst accident I ever seen...

  • Stopped by to put gas next to The Wheel Inn around 5:00 a.m. on 10/03/09. I went in expecting to see some reference to Pee Wee Herman's film, but none was there. I did see other pictures and memorabilia hanging on the walls, though. Went around to check out the dinosaurs for my kids and family to see... too early, so it was still closed. Seriously was hoping to see something about "Large Marge".
  • Yeah, I've done the same thing. Even sat in the booth where the Marge Memorial was located in the movie! No such luck. Plenty of Elvis crap and bull horns, though.
