Sŏngch'ŏn-ŭp (Songchon City)


The county seat for Sŏngch'ŏn-gun, located in south central South Phyongan Province. The town is situated along the Sŏngch'ŏn River in South P'yŏngan Province. It boarders Kangdong County (which is part of suburban P'yŏngyang and part of its government administration) from the South and with the province boarders Hoech'ang [Hoichang] County in the South East, Ŭnsan County from the North and P'yŏngsŏng from the West. Sŏngch'ŏn was the focus of international attention in July 2006 when the Sŏngch'ŏn River flooded, displacing a population estimated at 13,000. The Sŏngch'ŏn River also flooded between mid-July and mid August, 2007.
