Karl-Marx-Allee (Berlin)

Germany / Berlin / Berlin
interesting place, listed building / architectural heritage, Stalinist (architecture)

Gargantuan avenue, built between 1949 and 1961 as the Stalinallee. The main neoclassical section, between Strausberger Platz and Frankfurter Tor, was intended to be the showpiece of East german city planning, it combined housing, restaurants, offices and shops. Though it was getting run down by the time of reunification, most of it has since been restored and its historical value is now widely recognized.

A further section runs from Strausberger Platz on to Alexanderplatz, but it is lined only with steel and glass box buildings, not the highly decorated buildings of the original section.
