Urmia (also Orumiyeh, formerly: Rezaiyeh, Persian: ارومیه, Kurdish: Wirmê, ورمێ, Azeri: Urmu, Urumiyə, Urmiye) is a district and a city located in northwestern Iran. It is also the capital of the West Azerbaijan province in Iranian Kurdistan, situated on the western side of Lake Urmia near the Turkish border. Its population in 2005 is estimated at 602,403. It was a part of the Kurdistan republic of Mahabad during the years of 1946-1947. The city lies on an altitude of about 1,300 metres above sea level, and bears the same name as Lake Urmia about 20 km to the east, which is Iran's largest lake besides the Caspian Sea. Urmia lies in a fertile region, with rich agriculture producion as well as extensive local rug production.

Urmia is an ethnically diverse city, with a population composed of Azeris and scattered groups of Armenians and Assyrians. The latter 2 groups are Christian, and urmia has one of the largest Christians communities of Iran.The main languages spoken in the city are Azeri while all ethnic groups can speak/understand Azeri and Persian.
According to some historians, Urmia is believed to be the birthplace of the prophet Zoroaster, the founder of Zoroastrianism.

Urmia is an Iranian city with Azari ethnic majority. There are also Kurdish and Asuri Ethnicy in that city .
