Maspeth (New York City, New York)

Maspeth is a neighborhood in the western part of the New York City borough of Queens. Neighborhoods sharing borders with Maspeth are Sunnyside (including Blissvilee) to the west and northwest beyond the Brooklyn Queens (BQE) and Long Island (LIE) Expressways, Woodside to the north beyond Maurice & Calamus Avenues, Middle Village and Elmhurst to the east beyond the New York Connecting RR; Fresh Pond and Ridgewood to the south beyond Metropolitan Avenue; and finally, Greenpoint (Brooklyn)and East Williamsburg (Brooklyn) to the southwest beyond Newtown Creek. Laurel Hill forms a separate small sub-neighborhood in the north-western part of Maspeth.

The area known today as Maspeth was chartered by Dutch and English settlers in the mid-17th century. The Dutch had purchased land in the area known today as Queens in 1635, and within a few years began chartering towns. In 1642 they settled Maspat, under a charter granted to Rev. Francis Doughty. Maspat became the first European settlement in Queens.Most people who live in Maspeth are of Polish, Yugoslavic, Italian, Irish, German, Hispanic or Chinese descent. Maspeth is also home to the Metropolitan Oval.
