This lighthouse was erected after the original lighthouse was destroyed by the Great Havana hurricane of 1846.
It's keeper for 32 years was Barbara Mabrity. Her husband was keeper of previous lighthouse and she took over operation after he died in 1832.
Completed here in 1848 was a 50 foot high tower set away from the shore approx 15 above sea level.
After additional alterations over the years, in 1894 20 ft was added to the tower. Thus the light is approx 100 ft over sea level
The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1969 .

Lighthouse and museum both open to public. The lighthouse and Keeper's Quarters have been faithfully restored and maintained as they were before the lighthouse was deactivated. The view from the top of the lighthouse is very nice if you can climb the 88 steps to the top. Otherwise go to the La Concha hotel on Duval Street, ride the elevator to the top and get basically the same view for free.
