Govt. Girls High School (Okara)

During 1950s and 1960s, Mrs. Asar was the Principal of this high school. In Pakistan, girls’ school in-charge was called Head Mistress, whereas boys’ school in-charge was called Head Master. Mrs. Asar was an excellent administrator and a good family friend. She had only one daughter named Firdous, older than me, who must be in her late 60s, by now. Both, mother and daughter had slightly darker complexion. During my childhood, I never saw her husband; she was a widow! She used to wear Sari and was a very graceful person. She never allowed boys over 10, to enter the school, during academic or sports activities. Her daughter Firdaus had later settled in Lahore, she had two sons; unfortunately her husband also passed away.

At least since the inception of Pakistan in 1947, the school was located on Tahsil Road, just less than quarter mile away from our Nana’s home (Qari Abu Muhammad Mohi Ul Islam Usmani). The Municipal Hospital was on the eastern side of the School; Bakkar Mandi (Cattle market) was on the western side; Water Sanitation Plant was behind the school on northern side.

I love Okara and have many memories associated it. Our family owned agricultural lands and fruit orchards (Bagh) in the vicinity of Okara, in Gogera, in Karman Wala, and in Marula (North of Renala Khurd). Gogera used to be District Headquarters prior to Montgomery-Sahiwal during British Rule. I grew up in Lahore, but Okara was like a second home for us.
