Shahid Beheshti University , is located in Evin & Darake District, and extends into the Velenjak District of northern Tehran, Iran on a main Campus of approximately one million square meters.

The university was initially grounded as a private university for the elite of the late Pahlavi era, but was soon opened to the ordinary people as the National University of Iran after 1979 , becoming one of the two best universities of Iran (the other one being the Tehran University). After the Islamic Revolution the NUI was renamed the Shahid Beheshti University (SBU), in honor of the assassinated Ayatollah Dr. Beheshti and 120 other people who were killed by a bomb of the Mujahideen-e Khalq (MKO or also MEK a communist-islamistic party that was banned from Iran due to its terroristic attempts, and is currently on the blacklist of the US Department of State).
