This is a complex interchange on West Virginia Route 121 (Coalfield Expressway) north of Sophia, West Virginia. The expressway interchange includes a compressed diamond interchange with West Virginia Route 54/97 (Lester Highway) and a semi-directional Y-interchange with West Virginia Route 16 (Robert C. Byrd Drive). The interchange is the northern terminus of West Virginia Route 121, which is part of the future U.S. Route 121, the Coalfields Expressway, from Pound, Virginia to Beckley, West Virginia. It is also the northern terminus of West Virginia Route 54. West Virginia Route 97 leaves Route 54 and joins Route 16 near the interchange. The interchange was constructed around 2004 as part of the first segment of the Coalfields Expressway to open to traffic. There are future plans to extend Route 121 to the east, between the towns of Sophia and Midway, bypassing the interchange and joining Interstate 77 at Interstate 64.
