The island has been controlled by several different countries throughout the history of the slave trade. Goree was the point of departure for many slaves headed to Europe, or the Americas, hence the importance was based upon financial gain at the expense of slavery. Filled with sobering history, the island is filled with warm people today, many of whom are talented artisans.
