By the lake, College Oak resides. The Oak tree has been rumoured to date from around 948AD, but this is unsubstantiated.Other websites cite the tree as being 400 years old. Either way, the original trunk's interior is rotten and as a result no accurate dating can take place.

  • The notion that the Radley College Oak "was planted around 948 AD" is nonsense for several reasons: a) People did not plant trees other than fruit trees in the Middle Ages b) This tree is a (broken) 'maiden' oak which grew faster than if it had been a 'pollard' oak c) As it is hollow it cannot be 'aged' but it is probably not more than 400 years old d) The writer is apparently ignorant of the existence of many really ancient oaks in England
  • At Aljos Farjon, I have updated the tag's information and I have also included a Wikipedia link to prove further more of your point.
