The Highway 54 Commercial District is Owensboro's main commercial district after the decline of the South Frederica Commercial District. Many box stores have moved from Frederica to Highway 54, Hobby Lobby being a prime example. The Gateway Commons development is the biggest change to the area, starting construction in 2018. Owensboro's Malco Cinema was one of the first to move, building a state-of-the-art facility near the entrance.
