Since it was opened in a strategic location for exports in 1967, the Gibraltar-San Roque refinery has become a highly integrated with the surrounding petrochemicals complex and other local industries, which it supplies with energy products. Its process units operate using technologies designed both to save energy and to ensure maximum safety for people and at the facilities.

The refinery occupies an area of 1.5 million m2 and directly employs over 1,000 workers on permanent contracts, not to mention a much larger number in ancillary undertakings. These industries also generate indirect employment in the district.

Recently implemented improvements and new energy recovery projects have increased the energy output at this refinery. In 2010 the new FCC boiler was brought into operation while several modifications were introduced in the renovated R-56 unit.
